EP Review: La Casa al Mare – ‘This Astro’

‘This Astro’ is the debut EP from Rome three-piece La Casa al Mare.

Available as a 7 track CD, in a limited edition of 300 or as a 6 track digital download via bandcamp. CD bonus track is the self-titled ‘This Astro’.

La Casa al Mare describe themselves as, “a three piece band from Rome, Italy, experimenting with shoegaze, dreampop, psychedelic, noise music’. The band is comprised of Paolo Miceli (formerly My Violent Ego, Sea Dweller): drums, Marco Poloni (formerly La Calle Mojada): bass & vocals and Alessio Pindinelli: guitars & vocals.

Opening track, ‘I Don’t Want To’, is a distortion heavy homage to My Bloody Valentine; ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘M’, take us on a Slowdive flavoured odyssey; For me, this EP / La Casa al Mare really comes in to it’s / their own with, ‘At All’, a two-and-a-half minutes of perfect indie “dreampop” with an uptempo, summer sun feel good factor, the accompanying skate video featuring the rider talents of Azzurra Felici is the icing on the cake.

Following track, ‘Tonight Or Never’, carves a further slice of acoustic, ethereal dreamscape bliss.

‘CD Girl’ closes the digital version and again capitalises on La Casa al Mare’s lightness of touch.

‘This Astro’ closes the CD version of the EP, and cements the band’s “experimental shoegaze” DIY credentials, in this 5 minute tripped out space jam…
